Concern about the environment is common to all communities to allow future generations to live in safe, healthy and environmentally stable surroundings.
In this multi-layered approach, the plantation includes a sub-tree layer, followed by a tree layer and a canopy layer to create a quasi-natural ecosystem. With the use of this Japanese technique, the aim is to improve the air quality in the area and support the growth of biodiversity through the introduction of species of insects, fungi, moss, mammals and plants. The urban forest also enhances the area’s recreational amenities and provides urban green spaces for the citizens of Mangalore. Benefits of this project include protection against soil erosion and floods as well as an increase in the water table of the region.
In FY21, we continued to support the Miyawaki urban forest project in Mangalore by planting 500 native saplings. More than 40 varieties of native species from the Western Ghats which includes different plant groups — deciduous, evergreen and perennial plants — were selected to develop an urban green space over more than 8,700 sq. ft into a micro forest. This transformed the Ramakrishna mission campus in Mangalore.
On October 2, 2020, the project was dedicated to the citizens in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, the Commissioner of Mangalore city corporation, the Range Forest Officer and representatives from Ramakrishna Mission.
Recognizing the growing need in our local communities for a convenient and sustainable public transportation option, we made a significant contribution to the Bangalore metro rail corporation to fund the construction of the Biocon Hebbagodi metro station.
Aimed at promoting sustainable urban development and increasing the efficiency of the public transport infrastructure, the Biocon Hebbagodi metro station is a part of the new line being developed under the Bangalore metro rail project. This line at 18.82km stretches from RV road to Bommasandra and is designed to reduce the number of private cars on the road, thereby reducing traffic congestion and helping reduce the environmental impact of traffic pollution.
The Bangalore metro will also construct a foot over bridge that connects the metro station concourse to the other side of Hosur road, providing safe access for users.
