Education

Education is a powerful tool to drive change in communities. Our aim is to invest in initiatives that deliver high-quality, inclusive education and promote learning opportunities for all, focusing on underserved youth in rural areas.

Improving school infrastructure

To sensitize the students and community to personal hygiene, a sanitation complex with a handwashing facility was established at the government High School in Pejavara, Dakshina Kannada.

In addition, two toilet blocks have been refurbished in government schools in Kalavaru, Dakshina Kannada. In order to provide access to safe and clean drinking water, RO water systems were installed in Government schools in Dakshina Kannada.

Science technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning: Experiential science learning explore, play and learn (EPL)

In the  wake  of  the  health  risk  posed  by  the  COVID-19 pandemic,  a  blended  learning  model  was  facilitated. Our implementation partner, Agastya  International Foundation, was  quick  to  adapt  to  the  situation  at  hand  and transformed  the  outreach  from  a  physical  mode  of instruction  to  online  education  to  minimize  the  health risks without  compromising  student  learning.

The EPL program is a digital e-learning platform to cater to the  needs of students in rural areas and enhance their self-learning and exploration skills. With the principle of accessibility in mind, this program encouraged students to learn and explore through household materials and real-life scenarios.

Upon reopening of schools, a  Mobile Science  Unit,  equipped  with  more  than  100  science models,  provided hands-on  face-to-face learning  opportunities  to the  students  in  small  batches  with  necessary protective measures in  place.

This initiative benefited more than 1,600 students in 14 government schools by providing more than  46,000 virtual and over 6,000 face-to-face interactions. In addition, virtual training programs were conducted for the teachers to refresh their teaching methods and shift to a more child-centric approach, thus enhancing positive behavioral change in young students.

Digital summer workshops

In this initiative, children took part in workshops in arts and crafts, low-cost model building and other activities through WhatsApp groups. The purpose was to keep them engaged in learning activities, help them discover interests and enhance their independence, self-confidence and self-sufficiency.

Shikshana

To facilitate the teachers’ professional development and refine their STEM skills while adopting new approaches to learning assessment, we held virtual capacity building sessions via Google Classroom.

Career guidance

This program, conducted virtually, supported the students of grades nine and ten to understand their personalities and aptitudes and their interests to choose the right stream to pursue their career aspirations.

Child health activists mentoring and promoting health in society (CHAMPS)

CHAMPS is a program that nurtures a generation of empowered change-makers by fostering social responsibility.

The expert team from Narayana Health has trained students from classes eight and nine. Equipped with blood pressure (BP) monitors to screen for high blood pressure, students improve health-seeking behavior and promote healthy lifestyles in their communities to prevent the early onset of hypertension and associated cardiovascular ailments. Interactive visual aids are being used to deliver engaging lessons. Repeated training ensured the proper use of the BP monitor and understanding of BP screening and hypertension concepts.
