Safety, health and environment at the workplace is not only about eliminating the incidence of work-related injuries, diseases, fatalities, disaster, and loss of national assets. It is also about achieving a high level of occupational safety, health, and environment performance through proactive approaches — to enhance the well-being of employees and society, at large.
Syngene being a responsible corporate citizen, is committed to protecting people and environment, and preventing losses resulting from incidents/accidents. In this direction, Syngene’s management has adopted a goal-zero strategy for environment health safety and sustainability (EHSS). This is to ensure zero harm to people, protect environment, prevent environment pollution, comply with EHSS statutory requirement and more.
Syngene’s EHSS department helps the company conduct operations in line with Syngene’s values and beliefs on all these fronts. It drives sustainability through operations that minimize the impact on climate, waste and water. The EHSS function also looks into enterprise risk management encompassing operational, strategic and emerging risks. Subject matter experts, who are members of the EHSS function, advise Syngene on the adoption of industry best practices, to ensure Syngene
is positioned as a company that is committed to environment, safety, health and sustainability.
The EHSS team advises Syngene on adoption of best practices in water conservation, waste water treatment, energy saving and creating a safe workplace. It looks into measures to mitigate/avoid safety incidents and occupational hazards, keeping operational risks as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) as well as ensuring distribution safety of all products reaching its customers.
Our management system approach, consisting of gap analysis, planning, review and implementation has percolated to all business plans through ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 45001: 2018 standards at all levels. Our EHSS systems and processes have been audited and duly certified by M/S TUV Nord.
Through its annual environment plan and business targets, Syngene identifies projects and works towards achieving maximum possible recycling and reuse of natural resources. A management framework with defined structures, roles and responsibilities, group guidelines, audits and training has been instituted for this purpose.

Syngene has always had a strong focus on environmental sustainability and social responsibility. As a responsible corporate citizen, our aim is to create value while minimizing the environmental footprint and contributing to society. The ESG report (FY20-21) outlines our contributions on both aspects across the dimensions of environment social and governance (ESG).
Key statistics include 21% (21,290 KL) reduction in freshwater usage (vs. FY20); 70 million kWh of energy savings via operational efficiency (vs. FY20); 36,000+ patients accessing Syngene-supported health services, and more.
According to the security and exchange board of India (SEBI), while ESG reporting is voluntary for FY 2021-22, it is mandatory from FY 2022-23 onwards. It is applicable to the Top 1,000 listed entities by market capitalization. By releasing the ESG report this year itself, Syngene has shown itself to be an early adopter and at the forefront of Sustainability reporting.

Syngene has an occupational health center (OHC) at its site which offers health care services to its employees. This center is equipped with diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and is manned by qualified health specialists. The programmes conducted by OHC, include preventive health care through pre-employment and also periodic medical examination of all employees. The company endeavors to move towards the concept of wellness as it recognizes that a healthy endeavors is a productive employee.
To improve safety at the workplace, Syngene has strategically invested in a corporate initiative called Kavach. This is a multi-year program aimed at building an organization-wide safety culture encompassing employees, suppliers, partners and clients.
To achieve this vision, Syngene has placed safety at par with business performance with shared responsibility and accountability, including following safety guidelines, procedures and SOPs, in letter and spirit. Syngene uses an integrated approach using standard tools and practices to manage all workplace processes. This approach is helping the company drive focussed risk reduction in operations, using people having the right set of skills, mindset and behaviour.
